Project Information:

PiP Architecture transformed a condemned Grade II listed former 19th C coach house owned by Jesus College for their own 21st C architecture practice. The design involved converting and modernising the existing spaces to create a positive working environment whilst retaining the majority of existing fabric and ensuring the character of the former coach house was preserved.

A high quality of workmanship was essential in creating a building that both retained the majority of the existing fabric and character of the former coach house and fitted the needs of a growing architectural practice. As part of this rearrangement, a new extension was added within the courtyard to form a conference room with views out over the courtyard.

Functionality was greatly enhanced through carefully incorporating biophilic elements into the office design. This created a natural and stress-free environment with the aim of promoting staff well-being and productivity. Elements of the natural world, such as day light, ventilation and plants were introduced, along with an open plan office layout designed to allow staff to interact and collaborate. Staff on the ground floor can communicate with those on the first and mezzanine, allowing for a constant flowing of ideas. Separate areas for work and to de-stress (such as the staff kitchen overlooking a courtyard garden) also encourage a sense of well-being.

Sustainability was also at the heart of this design. To bring the building up to current environmental standards whilst respecting the breathability of the historic fabric, PiP used products such as Pavatherm, a high-performance wood-fibre based insulation allowing the wall to breathe, coupled with renewable technologies such as an air source heat pump and sedum roof.
