Project Information:
PiP were approached to design and construct an extension to an existing listed building along Maids Causeway within the historic Cambridge City Centre.
The original house – a 2 storey Georgian semi-detached villa – was transformed by a contemporary rear addition, utilising mono pitches to reduce the impact on the neighbouring buildings. A recessed glass strip makes the break between the existing and the new extension clear. Bronze coated metal was used for the cladding with the intention of being in a similar tone to the existing brick.
To ensure the extension was a sustainable addition to the historic building, bricks were reclaimed with internal secondary glazing fitted to the existing house to reduce heat loss. Rainwater collection systems were installed for use in the garden and the WCs.
