We are excited to have appointed principle contractor on our latest greenbelt self-build.

The first is a 1 storey volume featuring a green roof and Peterson Tegl Kolumba brick walling that rotates its coursing 90 degrees around the front facing windows to create a dynamic and intriguing facade. Four contemporary windows protrude out from this wall connecting the residents with their front garden.

The second is a crisp 1.5 storey gable-ended volume clad in dark grey zinc that’s runs from roof to wall as well as black timber cladding to provide a elegant tactility. Dormer windows help to maximise headroom in the upper level and allow for desirable views into the garden and surrounding countryside.

A key aim for us was to create a dynamic and fluid connection between the house and garden. The buildings’ L-shape plan opens up more opportunities for framing views into garden areas. Floor to ceiling glazing elements in the rear immerse the residents in their garden and allow plenty of natural light to flood the interior. This glazing on the south elevation could also be harnessed for passive solar gain and thus improve the overall energy efficiency of the building.

The architectural language for this dwelling was derived from the agri-vernacular style and the use of natural materials helps the proposal to sympathetically merge into the wooded site and respond to its architectural context.

The dwelling is comprised of one single-storey gable ended volume with a plan form that weaves in and out of the existing trees. It has been meticulously designed to ensure the existing character of the site was retained through the appropriate use of materiality, scale, and massing. Floor-to-ceiling glazing along with a glass roofed entrance hall brings users closer to nature and helps to better engage them within their surroundings and the adventurous experience of this site.

A key architecture feature is the hit and miss timber cladding that runs over the windows of the dormitory wing. The hit and miss cladding design functions as vertical louvre’s that help to reduce overheating, improve privacy in spaces such as bedrooms, and cast interesting shadows within the internal spaces.

We are delighted to receive a delegated approval for the re-use of this former care home site to provide a mix of new residential units. Located on the Little Thetford Self Build site, the clients of Plot 8 wanted a bespoke house that reached Passivhaus standards. An overall minimalist aesthetic is proposed, with a light vertical timber cladding proposed for the entirety of the building, providing soft natural tactility. Playing into the rational geometric approach, dark framed windows are proposed of which will be partially hidden where they meet the cladding to create a seamless look.

Sun orientation and climate has been considered throughout the designing process. Morning and evening sunlight have been considered in the arrangement of windows in the internal space. Limited windows on the South face prevent overheating from solar gain. The strategies adopted include the provision of solar panels and window positioning in strategic places.

Thermal mass has been utilised within the design as the dwelling’s window positioning to the East will enable solar gains to be retained within the structure throughout the day and released into the internal spaces as temperatures drop overnight, softening the inertia in internal temperature fluctuations. Combined with an exceptional thermal envelope, the home will be extremely energy efficient and remain a futureproof home for decades to come.

The surrounding properties are typical 1930’s semi-detached houses, presenting mock Tudor / Arts and Crafts features such as half-timbered gables, hip roofs, jettied dormer windows, recessed porches and arched doorways. From here we found inspiration to design a building with thoughtful brick detailing and prominent arches to relate to the suburban context.

The arch was a perpetual motif in the preliminary sketches, which were taken through to the final proposal. The building features double fronted gables, a modern take on the traditional gables in the area.
This contemporary interpretation of traditional features makes for a unique scheme worthy of the prominence of a street corner in Cambridge.

The 'Floating' House is a 'paragraph 80' rural dwelling of outstanding architectural design and ecological enhancement.

Inspiration for the Architectural Language is drawn from the local vernacular and floating roofs to create an expressive form that sits delicately on the sloping site. After a careful study of concepts and potential structural solution's the stilted structure was selected as the best approach for this site. This delicate structure will help to minimize disruption to the existing ecology whilst allowing the house to float effortlessly above the topography.

The house is formed of two intersecting linear volumes —The first volume is fully glazed to allow views through it as you approach the entrance as well as providing 360 degree views from the inside to the surrounding landscape and countryside beyond; the other volume—a solid ‘box’ housing the bedrooms will be clad in timber so that it can be completely closed to form a crisp finely detailed box.

A continuous terrace stretches around the two volumes to form an outdoor covered space overlooking the adjacent Brook and surrounding landscape. This elevated amenity space will act as a viewing platform for the dwellers that further connects them into their surroundings whilst not disturbing the precious fauna and flora of the site.

The floating roof is a key design feature of this house, whereby a lightweight corrugated metal roof is propped up by a delicate lattice of steel sections to form a floating roof canopy above the two intersecting volumes. This roof helps with solar control and directing rainwater away from the perimeter terrace - extending over the window planes enough to prevent detrimental summer sun from overheating the house whilst simultaneously allowing warming winter sun to reach the thermal mass of the concrete floor.

Great consideration has been given to the scale, massing and materiality of the proposed dwelling to ensure it is sympathetic to that of the conservation area and consistent with that of agri-vernacular architecture!

Situated in the picturesque English Village just 9 miles west from the City of Cambridge in Caxton, Firs Farm seeks to provide a generous modern family dwelling with parking and a large garden. The site is surrounded by open countryside and has been designed to reflect the agricultural setting and local rural vernacular albeit a contemporary interpretation.

Attention to detail has been considered in the scale of the building, consisting of two forms; a two-storey ‘main building’ with a single storey ‘wing’ connected by a glazed link. Inside, the layout has been sensitively designed to fully integrate the building with its surroundings. The window positions provide naturally well-lit comfortable spaces with a close connection between the internal and external spaces whilst optimising the south and westerly aspect of the views over the countryside.

By utilizing materials that are contemporary yet fitting with the surrounding context, these create interest and articulation on the elevations that complement each other. Corrugated metal façade and roof and vertical timber boards with a metal standing seam roof reflect the previous agricultural use of the site and draws inspiration from the vernacular of buildings typically associated with rural agricultural sites.

Country house conversion and extension to a Listed building

A unique design in the small, picturesque village of Hemingford Abbots, located on the southern bank of the great river Ouse, PiP designed two exceptional quality and energy efficiency proposals with little to no visual impact on the immediate character of the village.

Taking advantage of the strategical position, behind mature trees and inspired by the riverside setting. PiP designed the 'villa', a proposal which grounds itself with the leafy setting and capitalises on the expansive views across the adjoining river and beyond to Hemingford Meadows.

A unique design in the small, picturesque village of Hemingford Abbots, located on the southern bank of the great river Ouse, PiP designed two exceptional quality and energy efficiency proposals with little to no visual impact on the immediate character of the village.

Taking advantage of the strategical position, behind mature trees and inspired by the riverside setting. PiP designed the 'villa', a proposal which grounds itself with the leafy setting and capitalises on the expansive views across the adjoining river and beyond to Hemingford Meadows.

Located on Trumpington Road and to the rear of No.2 Barrow Road, PiP have delivered an outstanding building of high architectural quality.

The ground floor incorporates an open plan contemporary kitchen, dining and sitting area, considered the heart of the home, providing a southerly aspect and physical connection to the rear garden, as well as reception room. All bedroom accommodation is arranged on a single floor.

By utilising a gap in the tree line arising from the removal of a poor-quality tree, the dwelling is set behind a well- established belt of protected trees whilst continuing a strong architectural language visible from Trumpington Road.

Located on Trumpington Road and to the rear of No.2 Barrow Road, PiP have delivered an outstanding building of high architectural quality.

The ground floor incorporates an open plan contemporary kitchen, dining and sitting area, considered the heart of the home, providing a southerly aspect and physical connection to the rear garden, as well as reception room. All bedroom accommodation is arranged on a single floor.

The proposal is a contemporary design drawing upon its agricultural context and the characteristically low pitched roof of the existing building; but instead of blockwork and mismatched corrugated metal, the dwellings’ material palette consists of a crisp modern standing seam zinc in grey quartz and pre-weathered grey timber cladding. This refined colour scheme enables the building to sit quietly in its context whilst still making a statement. The low pitched roof reduces any overshadowing or perceived overlooking to the neighbour, and retains the continuous view of the treetops in the field to the rear.

55,000sqft high-quality office development.

This project aims to reinvigorate a part of Cambridge’s industrial heritage and to protect it for the future by making it a vibrant, modern working environment.

The Old Swiss Laundry site boasts a historic asset to Cherry Hinton Road whilst the new interventions provide examples of quality industrial style design in a central area of Cambridge. The scheme creates the same kind of value and activity seen in areas like Milton Science Park and CB1 in this well-connected area that is central to many other businesses and so provides benefits to the wider area. The existing buildings define the layout of the site and create a principal ‘street’ off Cherry Hinton Road.
